15th August marks a historical summer bank holiday here in Italy called “Ferragosto”. Ferragosto traces its roots back to Ancient Rome, a tradition started by Emperor Augustus in 18 BC. It was a day of rest and merriment after weeks of hard labor in the fields. Today, it signifies the heart of summer, a time for Italians to kick back, relax, and revel in the company of friends and family.
